Alberta Labour Relations Board Filing Updates

ULFA Alberta Labour Relations Board Notice to Members

Earlier today ULFA posted a notice from the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) to their Members. Below is an excerpt of the notice:

On February 3rd, 2022, the University of Lethbridge (Board of Governors) made an application to the [Alberta Labour Relations] Board under Section 16 of the Labour Relations Code.

The complaint alleges that the University of Letbridge Faculty Association has violated Section 60(3) of the Code.

The complaint alleges that the [University of Lethbridge Faculty] Association is refusing to bargarin in good faith.

ULFA’s Filing Response

ULFA’s response to the Filing was posted yesterday (February 3rd, 2022) on the ULFA Website. An excerpt of the response is stated below:

You may have seen on Social Media or the Administration’s bargaining blog today that the Board has filed an Unfair Labour Practice complaint against ULFA.

ULFA denies the allegations and will defend itself at the Labour Board. Since we believe that our mutual energy can be better spent on trying to solve the current impasse rather than issuing threats and grandstanding, we will continue to encourage the Board to negotiate in good faith while their allegations are dealt with.

The entire response can be found on the ULFA website by clicking here.

The Social Media post (@uLethbridge via Twitter) that was mentioned in the response is available here.

University of Lethbridge’s Bargaining Update on the Filing

The University of Lethbridge Bargaining page includes information regarding this Filing (also posted yesterday). Below is an excerpt from this Update:

The University bargaining team has been willing to engage in substantive discussions with the very clear intent of avoiding a labour disruption. We recognize that a ULFA strike will threaten the academic semester and the education of University of Lethbridge students. A strike of any duration will have a negative impact on our culture, community, and the livelihoods of many not associated with the Faculty Association.

It has become evident that ULFA does not share the university’s commitment to avoiding labour disruption. We regret that positions taken by the ULFA bargaining team this week prohibit meaningful progress in negotiation, which has forced the University’s Collective Bargaining team to file a Bad Faith Bargaining complaint with the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB).
