RE: UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE
COLLECTIVE BARGAINING COVERAGE
EQUITABLE ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY
Dear Members, Listeners, and University of Lethbridge Community:
CKXU 88.3 FM (CKXU) is beginning regular coverage of the collective bargaining situation taking place between the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors and the University of Lethbridge Faculty Association.
As a federally licensed Radio Station, we adhere to the Broadcasting Act. Section 3(1)(i)(iv) of this act states the following:
“The programming provided by the Canadian broadcasting system should … provide a reasonable opportunity for the public to be exposed to the expression of differing views on matters of public concern.”
In response to this Section of the Broadcasting Act, CKXU is dedicated to providing equitable access to our station for parties from whom we have contacted for comment on the situation at hand.
As such, CKXU has come up with the following guidelines to navigate our coverage on the collective bargaining situation and what we will be offering to all involved parties:
-
An interview opportunity with a series of curated questions. These questions will be sent ahead of time for the interviewee’s perusal.
-
Written updates on CKXU’s Collective Bargaining Information webpage.
-
Additional weekly on-air updates and summaries .
-
The option of a weekly official update from each group.
-
Feedback and questions from the local campus and community members.
CKXU as a media broadcaster believes that it is not our job to tell our listeners what to believe or think. Rather, we provide the community with relevant information on matters of public concern so that they may form their own opinions and thoughts.
As we state before every program, “these views are those of the individual Programmer and may not reflect those of the CKXU Radio Society or CKXU as a whole”. With this sentiment in mind, we recognize that individuals have the right to voice their opinions in manners that do not inhibit the rights of others.
While the Station as an entity will not take a stance or “side” on the situation, we will be providing a platform for our members, listeners, and University of Lethbridge community members to express their opinions on the collective bargaining situation. CKXU will curate opinions from all sides to add to both on and off-air coverage. Submissions can be sent to CKXU via our website.
We thank you all for your continued support of the CKXU Radio Society and our projects. Please contact Genna Bourchier at [email protected] for any comments, questions, or concerns regarding the contents of this letter.
In solidarity and understanding,
THE CKXU RADIO SOCIETY
